Job Description:

McHenry County is seeking full time and part time seasonal road maintenance workers. These positions will perform a variety of maintenance related to the preservation and upkeep of County highways, bridges, drainage structures and other highway features, and DOT facilities.  Ideal candidates will perform semi-skilled work in operating tools and highway maintenance, in addition to performing essential snow and ice control operations.  All duties are performed in accordance with the county safety code and established safe work practices.

Full time seasonal regular hours of work are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. During the snow and ice control call-outs, these positions are on a mandatory 24 hour call-out status.

Part time seasonal workers are not required to work 40 hours, Monday-Friday, but only for snow and ice control call-outs on a 24 hour basis.

Employment may begin mid to late November, 2019 and is effective through March 27, 2020.

Required Skills:

In order to be successful in these positions the candidates must have the ability to:

  • Operate snow plow trucks with plows and salt spreaders, tractors, chippers and 2 cycle tools, etc.
  • Wash, grease and assist in maintenance/servicing equipment including minor repairs and preventive maintenance;
  • Repair, replace and patch asphalt and concrete surfaces and fill in aggregate shoulder ruts;
  • Direct and control traffic during road maintenance;
  • Remove and dispose of trash, dead animals and other debris found on highways;
  • Trim and chip trees and shrubs; the ability to work from ladders or scaffolding;
  • Perform difficult physical labor and work under extreme weather conditions.

Required Experience:

  • Candidates must possess a CDL Class A or B license with non-restrictive air brakes, and an “N” (Tanker) endorsement, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
